Has your book been published for a few years, and you’re wondering how to revitalize sales? Do you want to attract new clients or reach out to podcast hosts and event planners? Breathing new life into your existing book can be just as exciting (and rewarding) as launching something brand new. An anniversary re-launch will give you a natural reason to celebrate the book, attract new readers, and re-engage your current audience. Read on for six ways to implement the strategy.

1. Create an Anniversary Edition

That’s what Shonda Rhimes did for the tenth anniversary of her bestsellerThe Year of Yes. She added new chapters to illustrate how her life has continued to evolve since the book was written. You don’t have to go so far as to re-publish a new edition. Some authors put a new blurb on the cover, such as ‘Celebrating five years in print!” You can do something even simpler: create some graphics with your existing book cover and use a headline or banner to identify your anniversary. 2. Position the Book as Still Relevant

If you’ve written an evergreen book, show how the book’s themes have grown even more meaningful or timely since its first publication. Write a blog or social media post comparing what’s changed since the original launch and why your book’s message still matters (or matters more).

Then vs. Now posts are popular right now and that format will be familiar to potential buyers. Run a #ThenAndNow campaign on social media, highlighting key quotes or themes from the book that continue to resonate with readers.

Pitch podcast hosts about how your message applies to current events, industry changes, or personal growth trends.

3. Host a Reader Appreciation Celebration

Make the book relaunch feel like a thank-you party for loyal readers, and an invitation for new ones to discover your book.

Host a virtual anniversary party or live Q&A on social media, where you share insights, stories from your readers about how the book transformed their lives, or fun trivia about writing the book. Offer a limited-time bundle: If attendees purchase the book, write a review, or share the event, they will receive access to an exclusive workshop, printable, or bonus chapter. As part of the lead-up to the event, create a reader spotlight series: feature posts containing fans’ favorite quotes, great book reviews, or personal stories tied to your book.

4. Launch and ‘In Case You Missed It’ Program

Position the re-launch as a chance to reach a new set of readers or those who “missed it the first time.” Launch a social media mini-series (“5 Lessons from [Book Title]”) to introduce key ideas in bite-sized posts. Partner with influencers, bloggers, or niche communities that weren’t part of your original marketing. Shonda Rhimes did that by branching out from the major metropolitan area she had focused on during her original launch. In the relaunch, she is including smaller cities and communities.

5. Use a ‘Behind the Book’ Strategy

Invite readers to connect and find out what inspired the book, what you’ve learned since you wrote it, and why you’re revisiting it now.
This deepens the emotional connection with your fans and followers, adding authenticity. You can share in blog posts, social media posts, video reflections, or podcast episodes. Some topic ideas: “What I’ve learned Since Writing (add your book title here)”, “The Chapter of (add your book title here) that changed my life”, “If I could tell my past self one thing about (add your book title here)”. In all cases, you can invite readers to join you and share their transformations. Host a book club or discussion series (either live or via email), revisiting one chapter per week.
